The LifeStraw provides access to clean and safe drinking water anywhere. The LifeStraw is a Time Magazine “Invention of the Year” winner. LifeStraw filters to 0.2 microns through the use of hollow-fiber membranes, which are small tubes with even smaller pores. These pores allow water to pass, but prevent contaminants larger than 0.2 microns from flowing through. As you get closer to 264 gallons (1,000 liters), the pores will eventually become clogged with debris and the flow will stop. Stock one for each member for the family. Visit the LifeStraw site for more information.
An upgrade from the the LifeStraw, the LifeStraw Family filters up to 18,000 liters of water, enough to supply a gamily of five with clean drinking water for up to three years. Lightweight and highly portable, LifeStraw Family is perfect for camping. It makes filtering water a breeze at base camps, while car camping, or when camping with groups. It’s also great to have at home in the event of boil water advisories. In addition to purifying contaminated tap water, in a worst case scenario you can purify water from any water source near your home with LifeStraw Family. Visit the LifeStraw Family site for more information.
The Berkey water filtration system is great addition for anyone concerned about clean water supply interruption and/or portability. The Berkey Royal is the most popular size. This model comes with two purification elements. With two elements the system can purify 4 gallons per hour, with an additional two elements 8 gallons per hour.
One slight difficulty with the Berkey water filtration systems has been priming the black filters. The filters have to be primed (because of the media and small pore size) in order for water to flow through them properly. This usually required holding them against a faucet and forcing water through them. This isn’t always the easiest thing to do especially with all the newer types of faucets. Now Berkey has developed a primer specifically for the black filter elements. With the primer you can prime or backflush Black Berkey Elements without a faucet while reducing the amount of time & effort.
